OeAW - Discovering the future

Austria's largest non-university research and science institution, the Austrian Academy of Sciences - OeAW has the task to "promote science in every respect". Founded in 1847 as a learned society, today the OeAW has over 760 members and around 1,800 employees dedicated to innovative basic research, interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and the dissemination of new insights. The OeAW initiates and maintains partnerships worldwide and represents Austria in international scientific organizations; it cooperates with numerous institutions in the scientific field in order to actively shape the research landscape.

For over 140 years, OeHI Rome has served as an interface between Austrian research on Italy and Italian research on Austria. It operates an important subject-specific research library. Numerous international institutes in Rome, together with the Italian university and research landscape, offer opportunities for cooperation and networking between research projects and individual researchers. Since 2025, the OeHI has been operating as a science-oriented unit under the umbrella of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and serves as a branch of the ÖAW.
