Academy Scientist (f/m/x) "Sprachdynamik in Österreich"

The position is situated in the context of the OeAW long term project “Language Dynamics in Austria” (‘Sprachdynamik in Österreich’, DynAT), which is dedicated to the comprehensive documentation and analysis of processes of language dynamics in Austria. The project combines research on language variation and language change, with a particular focus on lexis and its interfaces. It adopts a modern text-technological approach that places digital methods and formats at its core. Your tasks will include research on language variation and language change in Austria (with a focus on lexis and its interfaces), lexicographic processing of historical and contemporary language data, and corpus linguistic optimization of databases and corpora. The position requires solid linguistic expertise in language variation, language history, dialectology and lexis, as well as basic technical skills and familiarity with current developments in the field of Digital Humanities, in particular corpus linguistic methods. 

Your Tasks

  • Conduct research on language variation and change in Austrian dialects 
  • Contribute to the preparation and submission of project proposals related to research on language variation and change in Austria
  • Perform lexicographic and corpus linguistic processing and analysis of language data and corpora from the institute (including the “Dictionary of Bavarian Dialects in Austria (WBÖ)”)
  • Collaborate within the research department “Linguistics” (consisting of postdocs, doctoral students, student assistants, and professors)
  • Participate in project meetings (in various formats and group sizes), conferences, and symposia

Your Profile

  • Completed doctorate in one of the following areas: German Philology/German Studies with a linguistic focus; Linguistics with a focus on German; Computational Linguistics with a focus on lexis/lexicography; Digital Humanities with a linguistic focus
  • Experience in (supporting) linguistic research through digital methods
  • Experience in modeling linguistic data (especially TEI/XML)
  • Familiarity with digital methods and tools in Digital Humanities (DH)
  • Advantageous: experience with processing large datasets and/or semi-automated curation workflows, especially with XML databases
  • Very good knowledge of German, very good knowledge of English
  • Ability to integrate and work in a team, independence, reliability, resilience, and flexibility
