Praedoc (f/m/x) Medieval Studies

 (30h/week)

The position is assigned to the Institute for Medieval Research (IMAFO). IMAFO is an interdisciplinary research institution conducting top-level research on medieval history. The close interaction of the working groups allows innovative research approaches through the synergy effects of multidisciplinary research. IMAFO employs around 50 academic, technical and administrative staff.  

The successful candidate will develop a PhD project on a topic at the interface of historiography, philology and cultural studies within the research areas of the group leader, Pavlína Rychterová. Possible topics include the narratives of the past, medieval social identities and comparative research on knowledge transfer in pre-modern Eurasia.

Your Tasks

  • Independent development of a text analysis of medieval narratives of the past.
  • Application of textual translation theories in the digital environment in own research.
  • Independent analysis of textual sources on medieval history selected by the group leader.

Your Profile

Required:

  • Completed Master's degree (or equivalent) in history and auxiliary sciences.
  • Good knowledge of methods in digital humanities.
  • Experience in analytical work with textual sources on medieval history. 
  • Good knowledge and understanding of Latin and Middle High German.

The minimum annual gross salary for this position is EUR 53.140,92 (full-time based), in accordance with the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). For part-time employment, the salary will be adjusted on a pro rata basis in line with the agreed working hours.

This position is limited to 8 months. The desired starting date is Mai 1st, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will enroll in the PhD program of the History Department at the University of Vienna.
