The Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia (IKGA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a

Postdoc (f/m/x) Position 

(40 hours per week, starting as soon as possible)

with a focus on “Himalayan Connectivities” for a candidate with an Indological background. Historically, the Himalayan region has been a contact zone for cultural interaction between the Indian subcontinent, the Tibetan plateau, and beyond. This research focus addresses processes of circulation, mediation, and transformation of knowledge and practices in the domains of philosophy and religion, as well as in other knowledge fields; technologies in particular knowledge fields are also a possible topic of investigation. The position is based at the IKGA and is affiliated with the Cluster of Excellence “EurAsian Transformations.” 

Your Tasks

  • Conducting independent research in exchange with other relevant projects (https://www.oeaw.ac.at/ikga/himalayan-connectivities/)
  • Supporting other research projects with your expertise
  • Contributing to the Cluster of Excellence “EurAsian Transformations“ by organizing and participating in joint interdisciplinary research activities and public outreach

Your Profile

  • Completed PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Indology, South Asian Studies, or a related field
  • Excellent knowledge of Sanskrit and other languages used in the Himalayan region as relevant to the chosen research topic; excellent knowledge of English; knowledge of German is desirable
  • Record of international publications and lectures (corresponding to career level and taking into account relevant factors, including career breaks); an international network
  •  Flexibility, strong communication skills, creativity, ability to work in a team

Our Offer

The position will initially be awarded on a fixed-term basis for one year, with a subsequent extension until 31 March 2031 anticipated. The annual gross salary is € 70.167,44 (before taxes) (level W3/1), with the possibility of a higher salary level depending on qualifications and prior work experience. Funds for conference and research travel, as well as for the organization of academic events, are available.
