The position is assigned to the Biology Cluster of the Acoustics Research Institute (ARI). ARI is an interdisciplinary research institution. It undertakes top-level research on acoustics in phonetics, hearing, biology, numerics, and mathematics. The close interaction among the working groups allows innovative research approaches through the synergistic effects of multidisciplinary research. ARI employs ~50 academic, technical and administrative staff.
Your Tasks
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate to work within the biology research cluster led by Dr. Marisa Hoeschele. The specific PhD project will be determined based on the particular candidate and their interests, however it should be a theme that matches our ongoing research. Specifically, we are looking for someone to continue work on either 1) cross-species musicality – learning about the origins of music through studying parallels across species or 2) developing ways to study whether complex learned animal vocalizations can be considered a kind of “language”.
This position involves comparative cross-species research with humans and other animals, particularly budgerigars, which we have in our lab. The budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) is a small parrot species, that has many parallels to humans in terms of musicality, such as the ability to learn new vocalizations and being able to track and move to a beat. However, it is also possible to work with other species via collaborations with other labs in the city. A single species project (including humans) may also be considered if it connects with cross-species data.
Your Profile
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a related field (e.g., animal cognition, behavioural biology, cognitive science, psychology, music cognition, linguistics) – because the project is interdisciplinary, many fields could be considered related. If it’s not obvious how your field is related, please discuss this in your letter.
- Strong knowledge of written and oral English.
- The candidate should be able to integrate into a multi-disciplinary research team.

This position is part-time 75% (30 h/week). The position is limited to 3 years. The starting date is June 1, 2026.
The minimum annual gross salary for this position is EUR 53.140,92 (full-time), in accordance with the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). For part-time employment, the salary will be adjusted on a pro rata basis in line with the agreed working hours.
